Field guide № 04

A simple ritual for a longer life.

Good rug care is mostly gentle, regular attention—and knowing when not to improvise.

Vacuum gently and consistently

Follow the maker's instructions. In general, use gentle suction and avoid aggressive rotating brushes on delicate, fringed or high-pile rugs. Vacuum beneath the rug periodically as well.

Rotate to balance wear

Rotate the rug periodically so foot traffic and daylight affect it more evenly. Manage strong direct sunlight if fading is a concern.

Respond to spills—do not scrub

Blot liquid promptly with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Work from the outer edge toward the center and avoid rubbing. Test any cleaning method in a hidden area first.

Know when to call a specialist

Seek a qualified rug cleaner for valuable hand-knotted rugs, unknown dyes, pet contamination, persistent odor, large stains, water damage or structural repairs.

Store clean, dry and rolled

Clean and fully dry the rug before storage. Roll rather than fold it, use a breathable covering and keep it elevated in a cool, dry location.

Common questions

How often should I vacuum?

Base frequency on traffic, household needs and fiber type. The care label is your first authority.

Do I need a rug pad?

A suitable pad can reduce slipping, add cushioning and help manage wear. Match the pad to the rug and floor finish.
