Field guide № 03

Measure the room. Connect the furniture.

The right rug size makes separate pieces feel like one deliberate composition.

Living room rug size

In most living rooms, the rug should reach under at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs. For a more expansive look, place all seating fully on the rug. Avoid a small floating rug that touches none of the furniture.

Dining room rug size

Measure the tabletop, then allow enough rug around every side for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled back. Mark that perimeter and test chair movement before deciding.

Bedroom rug size

A large rug can sit beneath the bed and extend beyond the sides and foot, creating a soft landing. A pair of runners is a flexible alternative when room proportions make a large rug awkward.

Hallways and runners

Leave a visible border of floor along both sides. Check door swing and floor transitions, then add a suitable low-profile non-slip pad.

Before you buy: outline the full rug dimensions with painter's tape. Walk around it, open doors and pull chairs back. This five-minute test reveals more than measurements alone.
